How to Participate

Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Name Variants

The number of name variants for Michaud are numerous. Because of the WikiTree limit, we are tagging only three: Michaud, Michaux, and Michau. Spelling changed from 1600 French to parish priests using their spelling preference in baptismal, marriage and burial records, to Canadian and American English census takers trying to phonetically spell French names. Surnames often changed from parish record to record. Here are just a few variations:

  • Michaud
  • Michaux
  • Michau
  • Micheau
  • Michaut
  • Misho
  • Mishaud

MICHAUD IS ON MY MOM'S MOM SIDE OF FAMILY

Thank you for all your work. I recently discovered I am a Michaud descendent, and I have spent hours in here trying to correct my main family tree so I can appreciate the work done here. Would love to be part of the project. Here is my Michaud connection to the best of my knowledge as I have pretty much just had to follow the DNA.

Allo Karen - this is not technically "my" line, but my daughter's and grandchildren, so I am filling in as best I can, and SO impressed at what you've got already! I'm fortunate to also have my own ancestry back quite a ways, so I wanted my daughter to have the same.

Hello! my grandmother Pauline St. Pierre (Michaud) parents were hedwidge and arthur. id love to be part of this project, im really interested in my heritage. Have you found any native american ancestry in your research? ive always been told there was one from way back in canada and it came up on my dna (only 1%), but ive never been able to prove it. Also im curious if you're the relative that did the giant genealogy project and had the book made? i had my familys copy and sadly its been lost over the years and id love to somehow see it again.

Hello, Nicole, and welcome! Indigenous people were often listed as "Micmac" in parish registers, so it's very possible they are some of your ancestors. Most often they were Algonquian in the Quebec region. I didn't write the book you're referring to. I hope you find a copy of it again. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Brian - welcome to this study. I worked on a line that went by Michaud in Canada, but got anglicized to Mitchell in the States. Let me know if you have any questions. Also, if there is a subgroup you'd like set up, I'll be happy to do it.
